Description

This is a Remote Instructor Led Series (RILS) training. The remote classroom delivery is a modality that takes advantage of the instructor led training content, while allowing the same content to be delivered remotely. All training sessions will be delivered online with no face-to-face classroom attendance.

The Eclipse industry-reference Blackoil simulator offers the most complete and robust set of numerical solutions for fast and accurate prediction of dynamic behavior—for all types of reservoirs and degrees of complexity, structure, geology, fluids, and development schemes. Eclipse is a fully implicit, three-phase, 3D, general purpose black-oil simulator that includes several advanced and unique features. In this course, you will discover the various solutions Eclipse offers over the entire spectrum of reservoir simulation.

During this course, you become acquainted with the basic features and keywords of the Eclipse Blackoil simulator. An overview of the input data and file handling characteristics is followed by a presentation of each section of the input data and a practical exercise. The exercises allow you to construct a simulation model from scratch.

After you construct the model, you match the simulated past production to the measured production and future recovery optimization by simulating several production scenarios.

The course incorporates instruction in the use of the Petrel* Reservoir Engineering (RE) pre- and post-processor (part of the Petrel E&P software platform) as an integral part and the relationship between Eclipse and Petrel RE is explained.

Course Dates - September 7 - 11, 2026

Location - Houston TX (RILS)

Topics

  • Understand how a simulator initializes and executes
  • Comprehend the Eclipse Blackoil file structure
  • Understand input rules
  • Specify and edit input and output data
  • Define block-centered and corner-point grid geometry
  • Describe rock and fluid properties
  • Allocate initial pressure and saturation distribution
  • Define aquifers
  • Build and execute a simulation model
  • Control wells under history matching and production regimes
  • Analyze results through post-processing

Audience

Reservoir engineers, geoscientists, and other technically trained individuals introduced to reservoir engineering who are interested in learning reservoir simulation using Eclipse Blackoil simulator

Prerequisite

Reservoir engineering background

The course will be delivered in five (5) sessions lasting ~ four (4) Hours each. An intensive agenda also implies a homework after each session. Hence full-time commitment is expected from participants.

Each student will need the following to attend:

  1. Windows-based PC*
  2. USB Headset
  3. Internet Access capable for 720HD video-streaming
  4. Second monitor or tablet (highly recommended)
  5. Webcam (highly recommended)

*Hands-on exercises will be performed using locally installed Petrel and Eclipse software; hence client machine must satisfy min. requirements. Alternatively, practical sessions can be accessed through DELFI Cloud Environment (subject to availability).
